Past and Present
The Greater Berks Food Bank (GBFB) was founded in 1983 by a group of local clergy concerned about the community's hunger problem.
In our first year, the GBFB had 12 member agencies and distributed 500,000 pounds of food.
The GBFB collects, stores, and distributes food to more than 280 charitable agencies (food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, after school programs, and senior housing facilities) in Berks, Schuylkill and western Montgomery Counties.
The GBFB distributes 6 million pounds of food annually from its warehouse to these agencies which in turn distribute the food to local residents in need.
The participating charities can save as much as 75% of their food costs by receiving their food from the GBFB.
For every $1 donated, the GBFB can acquire $20 of food through its supply network.
